Searching the Archives

Advanced Search Features
šŸ“ Abbreviations & Smart Expansion

The search automatically expands common abbreviations:

  • St. → Saint
  • Dr. → Doctor
  • Rd. → Road
  • Ave. → Avenue
  • Sq. → Square

It also handles possessives automatically. Searching for Marys will find Mary's, Marys, and Marys'.

Example:

Searching for St Marys finds: St Marys, St Mary's, Saint Marys, Saint Mary's

šŸ” Exact Phrases

Use double quotes to search for exact phrases:

  • "London Road" will only match that exact phrase
  • "Market Square" won't match "Market" or "Square" separately
šŸ“„ Include Text Found in Documents

Tick this option to search within the text extracted from PDF documents and images. This provides a more thorough search but may return more results.

Sorting & Filtering Results
ā¬†ļø ā¬‡ļø Sort Results

Click the sort button above your results to organise them:

  • By Reference ID
  • By Document Type
  • By Last Updated date

Click the same sort button again to reverse the order (A→Z to Z→A, or vice versa).

šŸ”½ Filter Results

Two filter dropdowns appear above results:

  • Has Document: Show only items with a viewable file, or only those without
  • Document Type: Limit results to specific types

Click Clear Filters to reset both filters at once.

šŸ–¼ļø Image Search
How it works:
  • Click the Image Searchtab at the top of the page. The search panel turns blue to show you're searching images.
  • Type a description of what you're looking for, such as "church interior", "market stall", or "street scene with buildings".
  • The system searches the AI-generated descriptions of images in the archive and shows matching photographs and illustrations.
  • Click View on any image result to open the full document.

Image Search works best with specific, descriptive queries. For example, "street corner shop" will find more relevant results than just "shop".
